Generic name for pottery and porcelain products made in and around Seto, Aichi prefecture. Pottery production started in the Kamakura period, continued through the Momoyama period, when pieces for the Japanese tea ceremony were in demand, and into the Edo period when products for everyday use were made. Porcelain production started here in the early 19th century.
