    Sarayama was once a term referring to a place where pottery was produced.

    Specifically, in Arita Town, Saga Prefecture, it was used as a proper noun to refer to a region that flourished as a center for porcelain production since the Edo period. Arita's "Sarayama" was where many kilns and pottery merchants gathered, efficiently producing porcelain under a division of labor system.

    The term Sarayama can be said to symbolize not only the pottery production area itself but also the entire town where the lives and culture of artisans thrived.
