Takayama Touki Sometsuke Kikuwari Seigaiha Handled Small Bowl 10cm
The exquisite "handle" offers practical usability that fits perfectly in your fingertips.
When we, the staff of a tableware specialty store, first held this bowl, we were immediately drawn to the exquisite design of its "handle."
Although it's a compact small bowl that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, this small handle makes it surprisingly easy to use. Your fingertips effortlessly catch it when serving or when you want to move the dish slightly during a meal. Weighing only about 100g, it's also highly useful for set meal style tables where multiple small bowls are arranged.
"Kikuwari" and "Seigaiha" to beautifully showcase your dishes.
A serene design featuring the auspicious "Seigaiha" (wave pattern) drawn in traditional "sometsuke" (underglaze blue). Combined with the "Kikuwari" (chrysanthemum-cut) shape, where the rim undulates like chrysanthemum petals, simply placing blanched greens, vinegared dishes, or small delicacies instantly brightens the presentation. It's not only perfect for Japanese side dishes, but also as a condiment holder, or for dip sauces and jams with Western meals, offering a modern versatility without feeling out of place.
Please read before purchasing (About the "individuality" of the ware)
While we only sell genuine products that have passed manufacturer inspections, due to the nature of handmade pottery, this product has the following unique characteristics. We hope you will appreciate them as one-of-a-kind "scenery" not found in mass-produced industrial goods.
- There may be slight differences (individual variations) in the texture and color of the sometsuke, and in the shade of the glaze.
- "Iron spots," which are small black dots formed by iron content in the clay during firing, and glaze drips may also be present. These are the inherent "individuality" and "flavor" of pottery born from the kiln, not found in uniform mass-produced tableware. We carefully inspect each item before delivery, so please enjoy this one-time encounter.
- For any other concerns, please contact us.
It is compatible with microwave ovens, dishwashers, and even freezers. The greatest charm of Hasami ware is its durability, allowing you to use it everyday without worrying about special care, even in a busy daily life filled with work and household chores.

【Feel and Mouthfeel】"Thin Rim" and "Handfeel" Created by Craftsmanship
The delicate appearance and reassuring feel in your hand. The contrast is astonishing.
The main appeal of this small bowl is the mouthfeel of its "thin rim," as indicated in the product name. Compared to typical porcelain small bowls, the rim is finished to be extremely thin. When bringing dashi or soup to your mouth along with the food, you don't feel the thickness of the vessel, allowing the flavors and aromas of the dish itself to spread directly.
On the other hand, the body from the mid-section down to the foot retains a substantial yet appropriate thickness. The three-dimensional ridges and indentations of the "kikuwari" (chrysanthemum pattern) naturally catch your fingers, making it less slippery even with wet hands, and providing a comfortable sense of security as it fits snugly in your hand.
【Plating and Shadows】Professional Three-Dimensional Effect to Enhance Food
Not just a 'blue line'. The three-dimensional light and shadow of the chrysanthemum pattern shine under illumination.
We actually tested various dishes in the store. The "morning glory" shaped opening, with a depth of 6cm and a diameter of 10.8cm, creates the most beautiful balance for serving dishes like blanched spinach or simmered foods with a slight height in the center.
When illuminated from directly above or at an angle, the hand-painted blue染付 lines and the ridges and indentations of the chrysanthemum pattern intersect, creating a radial shadow effect that appears behind the food. This shadow effect elevates simple Japanese dishes like green vegetables (blanched greens, edamame), jellied white fish, or chilled tofu, making them appear as if they came from a high-end restaurant.
【Durability and Practicality】"Thin but Strong" Professional-Grade Toughness
Looks delicate, but is actually easy to use and can be washed vigorously in the dishwasher.
To address concerns like "Won't a thin rim chip easily?", we conducted washing and stacking tests in our store. While the rim is finished thinly, being a hard, vitrified porcelain unique to Arita ware, it possesses sufficient strength to withstand daily microwave use and continuous washing in a dishwasher. Furthermore, thanks to the smooth, high-quality gloss glaze, oil and dashi stains rinse off easily with water, and it dries exceptionally well. When stored, the footring securely interlocks, allowing several pieces to be stacked without wobbling, a space-saving design.
Individual products may vary slightly in color, painting style, texture, and weight. Additionally, some products may have small black dots (iron powder) on the surface or glaze drips, but these do not indicate a defect in quality.

A refreshing view in the palm of your hand, weighing 110g. The Hasami-yaki "Fuki no Ha" small bowl brings a fresh seasonal touch to your dining table.
The first time I picked up this small bowl shaped like a butterbur leaf, I was surprised by its pleasant lightness. When gently cupped in both hands, the cool, smooth feel unique to porcelain and the exquisite weight of just 110g, which doesn't strain the fingers, feel perfectly natural. Crafted by Korin Kiln of Hasami-yaki in Nagasaki Prefecture, this vessel features a beautiful, translucent glaze accumulation at the bottom, called "bidoro tamari," resembling glistening morning dew on the back of a leaf. I've cherished it for a long time; it's become indispensable, bringing a refreshing breeze and a vibrant atmosphere to my dining table whenever I serve everyday side dishes in it.
"Bidoro Tamari" with translucent depth enhances the freshness of your dishes.
Every time I use it at the dining table, I'm struck by the profound beauty of the "bidoro tamari" created by the glaze gathered at the bottom. Its smooth, glossy texture is gentle on cutlery, and the sensation when brought to the mouth is very natural. The contrast is exquisite when serving not only classic Japanese side dishes like blanched spinach or octopus and cucumber in vinegar, but also Western desserts like plain vanilla ice cream or fruit. The refreshing background of celadon green (bright yellowish-green) acts like a frame for the food, transforming familiar home cooking into a strikingly vibrant scene.
The craftsmanship and rich expression that grows with use.
Hasami-yaki, produced in Nagasaki Prefecture, has a long history of being cherished as everyday pottery by ordinary people. This small bowl from Korin Kiln is no exception; the plump veining has the warmth of handcrafted work, and its size of 11cm on the long side fits perfectly in the palm of your hand. What draws me in with daily use is the unique and rich expression that varies slightly from one piece to another. Gazing at the tiny iron specks (black dots) on the surface and the subtle glaze drips, I can feel the "artisan's breath" that isn't present in uniform mass-produced items, deepening my affection for it as my own personal vessel.
Perfect stacking: "Tough practicality" beneath its beauty.
No matter how beautiful a dish is, if it's difficult to handle, it will eventually end up forgotten in the back of a cupboard. However, this small bowl, despite its delicate appearance, possesses surprising toughness, being compatible with "microwaves," "dishwashers," and even "freezers." Thanks to its gently tapered, mortar-like shape (4.8cm high), stacking is very smooth, and even when stacking multiple pieces for the whole family, it doesn't take up much cupboard space. You can chill cold desserts right in the bowl in the freezer, reheat leftover dishes in the microwave, and then put them straight into the dishwasher after your meal. This real-world usability, perfectly suited to modern life, is the main reason I find myself reaching for it every day.
While the beautiful form of the butterbur leaf and the "bidoro tamari" scene are immediately captivating, what becomes truly apparent with prolonged use is its overwhelming "everyday practicality." From blanched greens to delicate Japanese sweets, its versatility enhances any dish, making it look fresh and appealing. It will undoubtedly serve as a top-tier piece, not only for special occasions but also as a reliable companion for daily drinks or filling gaps in your menu.
Recommended for:
- Those who want to elevate everyday side dishes (like blanched greens or chilled tofu) to a more refined, restaurant-like appearance.
- Those looking for beautiful Japanese tableware that is easy to stack for storage and can be used without worry in the dishwasher or microwave.
- Those who appreciate the unique glaze accumulation and individual character of handcrafted pieces over time.
- Those who dislike heavy tableware and seek a light feel (approx. 110g) that is comfortable in the hand and fingers.
