Sometsuke Arabesque Shaving Brush 13.4cm

Karakusa (arabesque) is a botanical motif introduced from Tang Dynasty China. In the mid-Edo period, it was used as a secondary motif to decorate the rims of plates or the shoulders of jars. Later, the area covered by karakusa expanded, and it came to be depicted across entire surfaces. This motif became popular in the 18th century. The delicate and elegant karakusa, featuring petals regularly arranged on swirling leaves, combines gentleness and strength. A glaze that vividly expresses the robustness of the vines is used, highlighting the beauty of the brushstrokes.

The handle is crafted by Kisho Kiln, known for its expertise in "reproducing Ko-Imari." Particularly noteworthy is their reproduction of "Usu-Ruri Sosagi," which revives the elusive technique of "thin lapis lazuli." This design is a modern reinterpretation of the pattern and texture of the "Sometsuke Shirasagi-zu San-kyaku-zara" (Blue and White Heron Tripod Dish), which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

The brush head is made by Chikuhodo, a world-renowned brush workshop. This luxurious shaving brush uses more badger hair than usual. When wet, the bristles become soft, providing a smooth feel against the skin. Furthermore, badger hair has a moderate firmness, allowing for a finer lather.

Please note that individual products may vary slightly in color, painting texture, and weight. Additionally, some products may have small black spots (iron particles) or glaze drips on the surface, but these are not considered defects in quality.
